AG Club: The Avant-Garde Collective Redefining The Way We Consume Music

As the way we absorb music continues to evolve, the Bay-based collective’s unique approach to music transcends the audio file. Their use of unique visuals, authentic branding, and boundary-ridden sonics offer an unparalleled product worth consuming.

AG Club consists of 14 members all contributing to the collective’s success, though the band itself is made up of 2 members: Jody Fontaine (writer & rapper) and Baby Boy (vocalist & graphic designer). Although the collective is known for its music, it also houses talented individuals beyond the music scene. Manny Madrigal, known as 777 media, directs and films the majority of their visuals. The collective’s videos live up to their avant-garde name particularly with their experimental visual for their song “Hngover”. The cinematic video leaps beyond the corny cliches of today’s music videos, carrying a heartbreaking narrative that perfectly encapsulates the song's introspective and honest lyrics. In truth, labeling it as a music video would be an insult to the experience it provides.

In many cases, up-and-coming acts lose brand authenticity during their rise to popularity however--AG Club with the backing of AWAL-- has been able to create and maintain an authentic brand centered around bay and skating culture. To put it simply, AG Club is exactly what’s cool. Beyond the music, the collective publishes up-close-and-personal shorts to their youtube channel, best described as a blend of skating and home videos. These candid videos allow their audience to get to know the group beyond the music; essentially allowing the audience to be a part of the club.

The scope of AG Club’s music is vast, their recent two parted project F*ck Your Expectations contains songs ranging from trap rap on ‘Memphis’ to warm and fun tracks like ‘A B*tch Curious’--reinforcing their genreless sound and paving their path to stardom in the process. The group’s sheer versatility has the music industry struggling to pinpoint exactly what they are. Although growing pains are inevitable, the collective’s refusal to conform to the pressures of the music industry is what makes them such a singular and exciting outfit.
